Aspirin Could Reverse Effects Of Tooth Decay Researchers Claim

 Popping an aspirin could reverse the effects of tooth decay and cut the number of fillings we need, researchers have claimed.

A study conducted at Queen’s University Belfast found that the painkiller can enhance the function of stem cells found in teeth, helping to regenerate lost structure.

Low doses increased mineralisation and the activity of genes responsible for forming dentine, the hard bony tissue that is usually damaged by decay.

Lead scientist Dr El Karim told how the discovery has “huge potential” to change how the world’s most common dental disease is treated.
He said: “The use of aspirin, a drug already licensed for human use, could not only increase the long-term survival of teeth but also result in huge savings for healthcare systems worldwide.”

Tooth decay is the most common dental disease in the world affecting a third of adults.

Around seven million fillings are provided in the NHS each year in England alone and the experts say the findings could reduce the crippling £3.4billion a year cost of dental care.

Lab testing found that low-dose aspirin “significantly increased” the rebuilding of minerals which restores strength and function.

It also stimulated existing stem cells in the tooth to regenerate the damaged tooth structure.

Dr El Karim added: “There is huge potential to change our approach to one of the biggest dental challenges we face.

“Our initial research findings in the laboratory suggest that the use of aspirin could offer an immediate innovative solution enabling our teeth to repair themselves.

“This novel approach could not only increase the long-term survival of teeth but could also result in huge savings for the NHS and other healthcare systems worldwide.”
